We expect a few brief preliminary reports from members that observed the April 8 total solar eclipse which spanned the U.S. However, we will have an eclipse extravaganza at the May meeting in order to share more detailed reports.
Our April 10th meeting will feature a live in-person talk by Dr. Gerrard “Jerry” Kriss (Space Telescope Science Institute)
Speaker Bio: Dr. Kriss, Astronomer Emeritus, is the Former Associate Director for Instrumentation at STScI. He received the PhD in Physics, and the SB in Physics, both at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Lecture Title: “How supermassive black holes influence galaxies.”
Abstract:
Most large galaxies like the Milky Way have a supermassive black hole at their center. These black holes, a million to billions of times more massive than the Sun, achieve their greatest brilliance when matter falls into them. In active phases the resulting radiation can outshine the whole galaxy. A puzzle of galactic evolution, however, is that the mass of the central black hole is tightly related to the mass of the surrounding host. The popular solution for this conundrum is that feedback from the black hole suppresses star formation and expels gas from the galaxy. This feedback is fueled by winds arising from the accretion disk that feeds matter into the black hole. I will review evidence for such feedback mechanisms based on X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared observations of the outflowing winds using multiple space-based observatories (HST, XMM-Newton, Swift, NuSTAR), culminating in recent highlights from the new Webb space telescope.
