The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science. High school and middle school students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.

On Science Day there will be three sessions, each being one hour and 15 minutes long.

Wayne (Skip) Bird will be one of the guest speakers for two sessions.

Session 2- 10:30 - 11:45 a.m., Session 3-1:15 - 2:30 p.m.

Exploring the Universe with the "I" Word. Find out how, by using the most powerful word known to mankind the "I" word (don't know what the "I" word is come and find out), to find a way through the maze of planets (12 at last count-but who's counting), to explore the life and death of a star (make your very own white dwarf), black holes work (watch as we warp the fabric of space), We will find out who is smarter than a fifth grader with Cosmic Survey Cards (start studying now otherwise you will not have a chance), with Wayne Bird of the American Astronomical Society and Observatory Director (Once it's built) of the Westminster Astronomical Society. Learn fun and unique ways to leave the planet, journey to the stars and still be back in time for lunch.

Highlights of program "Chicken Little was Right--How Big is Big, How F a r is F a r and How Small We Really Are--Time Travel Made Easy--and if time, Fusion Magic tricks.'

These observing sessions are intended for members. We try to limit public participation so members can get in some quality observing. Begins at Sunset. Warning: This event may conflict with scheduled activities at the nature center. Those activities always have priority. This means that the parking lot lights may be on for a period of time during the the evening.

Planetarium shows begin at 7:30 with a second show at 8:30 if demand warrants. Cost is $1 for members of Bear Branch or $2 for non-members. Please call (410-848-2517) in advance to reserve your seat. Telescope observing is weather dependent. Come one come all come see and hear exotic tales about astronomy, journey thru our galaxy (if time permits). Afterwards take a look through our telescopes and see live (well almost live due to the delay of the speed of light) what was talked about inside. Time machines provided by the Westminster Astronomical Society.
